Know Before You Go: What to Expect During and After Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery often brings to mind LASIK, which is used to correct vision problems. However, LASIK is not the only important laser eye procedure. Lasers can be used during procedures to correct cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases and injuries.

If you have cataracts, glaucoma, or other trauma to the eye, laser eye surgery in Tampa may help. A specialist at Florida Eye Center will discuss what to expect during each specific procedure and will discuss whether you are a candidate for the procedures, however there are a few things many laser eye surgeries share in common.

How Long Will Laser Eye Surgery Take?

If you suffer from cataracts, you may be a candidate for laser-assisted phacoemulsification surgery. During the procedure, ophthalmologists can remove a cataract through a tiny incision between 1.8mm and 2.4 mm in diameter. An artificial lens can then be implanted through the very same incision, improving sight in as little as 15 minutes.

Another effective laser surgery is Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), which can be used to reduce intraocular pressure in patients suffering from glaucoma. This minimally invasive surgery can be performed in approximately 15 minutes in an outpatient setting.

What Types of Lasers Will Be Used?

At Florida Eye Center, LenSx® and LENSAR®, two femtosecond laser systems approved for corneal incisions, capsulotomies, and lens fragmentation, are used to increase surgical accuracy and reduce the likelihood of complications.

Will There Be a Long Recovery Time?

After most procedures, vision may be blurred for up to 24 hours and the eyes may be irritated for a few days. It may take up to three months following an SLT procedure to see the full benefits. After other laser surgeries, you may notice the changes right away. Your vision specialist will discuss the length of recovery time after your specific procedure and will discuss what to expect.

How Do I Know if I am a Candidate for the Procedure?

If you feel you may be a candidate for laser eye surgery, it is important to consult with an experienced opthamologist. Laser surgery is fast, safe, and effective, making it the ideal surgical option for many patients suffering from eye injuries and diseases — however, it may not be appropriate for all situations.

For those suffering glaucoma, cataracts, and other eye issues or injuries, an opthamologist will discuss the best course of action and how to prevent further damage while possibly repairing your vision. If you are a candidate, your doctor will discuss your specific procedure with you in detail so that you feel fully prepared.

It is normal to be nervous before undergoing any procedure, however, it is important to remember that many people undergo these procedures every day and the specialists at Florida Eye Center have successfully performed the given procedure on thousands of others just like you. With the right treatment, your quality of life will improve and you will be on the road to recovery.
