Routine Eye Care/ Examinations

A simple vision test is no substitute for a complete eye examination. At Florida Eye Center our specialists begin each patient encounter by assessing not only your ocular history but your medical history as well. We recommend complete eye examinations every two to four years for all adults over the age of 40, and a preschool examination for children. We also suggest once a year vision testing for people who wear glasses or contact lenses. Please visit the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeSmart website to learn more about a variety of eye diseases and conditions, ask a question or learn a tip, and stay up to date on the latest eye care news and developments.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that gradually steals sight without warning and often without symptoms. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve from increased pressure inside the eye. This nerve is responsible for carrying the images we see to the brain. At Florida Eye Center, our board-certified ophthalmologists are all qualified to evaluate and treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension using the latest in diagnostic equipment. In addition to medical treatment for glaucoma, Dr. Thomas Pusateri specializes in Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) treatment of glaucoma in those patients that are candidates for the procedure.

Cataracts

One of life’s inevitable problems seems to be the clouding of the eye’s natural lens that typically comes with advancing age. This is known as cataract formation. As cataracts progress, everyday activities such as driving and reading can become more difficult. Fortunately, surgery to remove cataracts remains one of the safest and most successful surgical procedures performed today. Patient satisfaction with the cataract surgery is even greater now that advanced technology lenses have become available, including the AcrySof® ReSTOR® and AcrySof® Toric Intraocular Lens (IOL). The ReSTOR lens has been uniquely designed to improve vision at all distances giving cataract patients their best chance to live free of glasses for most of their activities.

Laser

Each year, laser-assisted surgery is used to restore the vision of millions of patients. At Florida Eye Center, our team utilizes LenSx® and LENSAR®, two femtosecond laser systems approved for corneal incisions, capsulotomies, and lens fragmentation. Compared to traditional surgery, bladeless laser surgery is more accurate and may reduce patient dependence on corrective lenses. The team specializes in this minimally invasive surgery, which can be performed in approximately 15 minutes in an outpatient setting. Laser surgery is fast, safe, and effective, making it the ideal surgical option for many patients suffering from eye injuries and diseases.

Cornea conditions

Florida Eye Center is pleased to have a fellowship-trained cornea specialist available for consultation. Dr. Allen Pusateri has completed advanced training beyond residency to allow him to better diagnose and treat both common and atypical cornea and external ocular conditions, including: Dry Eye Syndrome, Contact Lens-Associated Problems and Infections, Corneal Trauma/Abrasions, Keratoconus, Pterygium, Ocular Herpes Virus and Shingles Infections, Corneal Dystrophies, Chronic Conjunctivitis and Ocular Surface Tumors.
